Centers for Education and Research in Moldova
CRDF and the Moldovan Research and Development Association (MRDA) announced the award of a two year, $300,000 grant to establish a world-class research and education facility in Moldova. The new Centers for Education and Research in Moldova (CERIM) program will develop the basic research capabilities of Moldovan state universities by establishing a high-level Center for Education and Research (CER) that will combine research and educational processes by establishing active links with external scientific organizations.
The grant was awarded to Dr. Gheorghe Ciocanu of Moldova State University for his proposal entitled "Center for Education and Research in Mathematics and Computer Science at Moldova State University". The Moldova State University will establish a modern, well-equipped center to integrate research into the academic curricula and provide new opportunities for young investigators in computer science and applied mathematics.
Dr. Ciocanu's proposal was selected by an independent panel of Moldovan and U.S. experts based on the project's commitment to build a new teaching program around the research center and to pursue topics of research that will make a strong contribution to international science and to an area that was identified by the Government of Moldova as being vital to increasing the capacities of the Moldovan economy.
The program is funded by cost sharing among CRDF, the host university, and other local funding sources in Moldova.
