CRDF, MRDA and ASM Support Moldovan Scientific Infrastructure Development

The U.S. Civilian Research & Development Foundation (CRDF), the Moldovan Research and Development Association (MRDA) and the Academy of Sciences of Moldova have awarded a total of $360,000 in grants to four Moldovan institutions for the purchase of scientific equipment essential to high quality research. 
Grant funds were made available through the CRDF-MRDA Major Equipment for Research Laboratories Program (MERL II).  MERL II will enhance the scientific infrastructure in Moldova and provide resources for new research opportunities. Winners were selected through a merit-based competitive process consisting of individual expert written reviews by American and NIS scientists and site-visits by Moldovan experts.
Grants have been awarded for the following projects:

  • Equipment for the Research of Photochemical Processes in Aquatic Ecosystems
    • Project Director – Dr. Nelly Goreaceva, Moldova State University


  • NMR Spectrometer for Application in Biochemistry and Biomedicine
    • Project Director – Dr. Fliur Macaev, Institute of Chemistry, Academy of Sciences of Moldova


  • Experimental Complex for Studying of the Electrophysical Properties of Low Dimensional Structures in High Magnetic Field
    • Project Director – Acad. Dumitru Ghitu, Institute of Electronic Engineering and Industrial Technologies, Academy of Sciences of Moldova


  • Using of Modern Equipment for Elaboration of Quality Control Methods at Different Technological Stages of Ecological Wine Produce Manufacturing
    • Project Director – Dr. Emil Rusu, National Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking

The Moldovan research and Development Association (MRDA) was established jointly by CRDF and the Government of Moldova in October 2000, and has provided opportunities to dozens of Moldovan scientists and science centers; funded their R&D activities; and helped them to find international collaborators.

The Academy of Sciences of Moldova (ASM) in its role of the highest scientific forum of the country, represents the only public institution of national interest in the sphere of science and innovation, is a plenipotentiary coordinator of scientific and innovation activity, scientific consultant of the public authorities of the Republic of Moldova, has an autonomous statute and acts on the basis of self-administration principles.
